Misereor Celebrates 50 Years of Service in Johannesburg

CONTACT was invited to participate together with several other partner organizations from Africa in the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of MISEREOR, which took place in Johannesburg on the 6th to the 10th of February.

Our Director, Despina Oikonomou Madonko, represented CONTACT.

The activities included a three-day partner workshop 6-9 February at the Birchwood Hotel in Johannesburg under the themes:
“ 50 Years of Partnership-Learning from the Past” and “New Strategies for extending our Partnership”

The workshop coincided with the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) and the participants of both events had the chance to interact on several events and exchange views and opinions and experiences.

Two special events took place during our stay in Johannesburg:

The ceremony for the granting of the Bonum Commune Award for His Eminency Cardinal Karl Lehman and Dr. Gustavo Gutierrez at St Augustine College on the 7th of February.

The Festive Mass in the historic Cathedral of Regina Mundi in Soweto on the 10th of February. This Mass marked the start of the Lenten Campaign 2008 under the theme: “With Wrath and Tenderness at the Side of the Poor”. It was, indeed, a very touching and impressive Mass with South African and International character.

In her follow up letter to Misereor and the other partners the Director of CONTACT wrote:

“I now feel even more proud to be a Misereor partner! I really appreciated the contact with the other partners and the bishops and all the people who are involved in the work of Misereor. I left Johannesburg with more knowledge, more friends, and more energy to do my work in this - at the moment - unfortunate place of the world, Zimbabwe.
I hope that with the Grace of God and our hard work we would get out of our problems one day.
Once more, Happy Birthday to Misereor and thank you for being an inspiring, cooperative and supportive partner. We value so much the assistance and the spirit in which it is granted to us: to have a real impact in the lives of the disadvantaged.
Warm greetings to Misereor, Aachen and all the good friends I met at the workshop and the celebrations!
Despina Madonko”.
